We are thrilled to be able to introduce you to our new students who joined us at the start of Term 2. After working really hard at Bernie's Beginners (our new name for Wednesday School) Luna (little sister of Arlo and Archie), Talia and Īrena have joined Room 8. Karaleigh had a big journey across the Pacific Ocean before she arrived at St Bernadette's on Monday to join Mrs Burke and the crew in Room 6. Then to top it all off, brothers Ryan (Room 3) and Richard (Room 7) started school on Wednesday! Welcome to you and your whānau, and wishing you happy schooldays at St Bernies.

Bernie's Beginners (Wednesday School)
Mary-Lee
Welcome to Term 2 for all new and returning children at our Bernie’s Beginners class. It was exciting to meet and welcome new faces and whānau to our growing group of children joining the St Bernadette’s School Community this week. Our letter of the day was ‘P’, P for penguin, pirate, pig and pop-corn. We had many fun activities to share with each other, finishing off with a fun story read by Mrs Waldron. We even got to eat delicious pop-corn in our very own boxes designed and created by us. We are looking forward to many fun filled Bernie's Beginners afternoons with you all!
Remembering Pope Francis
We were very sad over the holiday break to hear of the passing of Pope Francis. He was a man of great compassion, courage, empathy and humility, who led by example. We will definitely miss hearing his wise words! Our thoughts and prayers over the next weeks are with the Cardinals who have the task of choosing someone to fill Papa Francisco's big shoes! All our classes have been enjoying learning more about how Pope Francis has impacted our world and the fascinating process that takes place when a new pope is chosen. You can see some of Room 5's learning in the pictures below.
Bernie's Bus
At the beginning of 2024 our school made an application to the HUGO Trust for funding to purchase a school van. The HUGO trust was established by Maryanne Green in honour of her father Hugh Green, and since 2017 has donated over 19 million dollars to charitable causes.Hugh Green, known as “Hugo”, was born on 24 October 1931, in Raphoe, County Donegal, Ireland, and was one of eight siblings. By today’s standards, the family had very little, but they made do with what they had. He often recalled, “If you had a good pair of boots, a good pair of socks, and a feed, that was it.” At twelve Hugh left school to work on the farm with his father, where he learned the cattle dealing trade. He was raised in a home where Catholic faith was at the core, and this faith stayed with him throughout his life. Like many Irish during that time, Hugh sought a better future, and at 17, he left Ireland for Scotland before eventually settling in New Zealand. Through hard work and perseverance, Hugh built a successful business in New Zealand, all while maintaining a commitment to helping others. As he once told his daughter Maryanne, “When I kick the bucket, I want a fair bit to go to charity.”
We were very excited to hear late in 2024, that the HUGO Trustees recognised a school van would make a significant positive impact on our community, and confirmed we had been successful in securing funding. The van had to make a long journey from Japan and has quietly ventured its way to Dunedin. Today it made the short trek up the school drive to be welcomed to St Bernie's. We were all very excited! A huge thank you to the HUGO Trust, Lindsay Routhan and SignBiz (Marti)! Thanks also to Tony (for driving the van to Dunedin) and Steve (for storing the van prior to its reveal), and Father Michael for blessing the "Bernies Bus".
Numicon Resources
It has been great seeing all classes using Numicon resources in Mathematics this week. We look forward to sharing lots more information with you about how these resources support learning in this essential area. I can tell you that as I went into classrooms, I really wanted to stay, listen and learn rather than return to my desk!
School Attendance
This year we have a target of improving our regular (90%+) attendance by 10% each term. As you can see by the data below we made a 5% improvement from Term 1 2024 compared to Term 1 2025. This is great but we think we can do even better! Please remember that we are here to help if you need support in getting your child to school!
Car Park
Thank you to all those whānau who follow our procedures for using the car park for pick up and drop offs. This helps us to keep our tamariki safe. It is always good to remind everyone what the expectations around the use of our carpark are:
Only park in designated car parks.
Spend no longer than 5 minutes in the pick up and drop off zone.
If car parks are full then exit, go left and round the roundabout to re-enter, OR park on the street and walk to collect your child.
Come a little after 3 p.m to avoid the congestion. We always have a teacher on duty until at least 3:20.
Get your child to walk to an agreed meeting place to be picked up.
Always actively supervise your child when walking in a car park area!
